الوقت
al-waqt
Telling the time in Arabic follows one pattern: the hour first, then what you add to it or take away from it.قول الوقت في العربية يتبع نمطًا واحدًا: الساعة أولًا، ثم ما تضيفه إليها أو تنقصه منها.
Every answer begins with الساعةُ ("the hour"). Ask the time with كم الساعة؟كم الساعة؟ — ما الوقت الآن؟
| Time | Arabic | Transliteration | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:00 | الساعةُ الواحدةُ | as-sāʿatu l-wāḥida | It's one o'clock |
| 3:00 | الساعةُ الثالثةُ | as-sāʿatu th-thālitha | It's three o'clock |
| 6:00 | الساعةُ السادسةُ | as-sāʿatu s-sādisa | It's six o'clock |
| 9:00 | الساعةُ التاسعةُ | as-sāʿatu t-tāsiʿa | It's nine o'clock |
| 12:00 | الساعةُ الثانيةَ عشْرةَ | as-sāʿatu th-thāniyata ʿashrata | It's twelve o'clock |
The hour is feminine because ساعة is feminine, so the number takes the feminine ordinal form: الأولى / الثانية / الثالثة, not واحد / اثنان / ثلاثة.الساعة مؤنثة، فيأتي العدد بصيغة المؤنث: الأولى، الثانية، الثالثة.
