Possession

الملكية

al-milkiyya

Arabic has no word for "my". It sticks an ending on the noun instead — and that ending is the whole of possession.لا توجد كلمةٌ مستقلة للملكية؛ بل لواحق تُضاف إلى آخر الاسم.

The possessive endings لواحق الملكية

Ending Meaning Example English
ـي my غرفتي my room
ـك your (m) غرفتك your room
ـكِ your (f) غرفتكِ your room
ـه his غرفته his room
ـها her غرفتها her room
ـنا our غرفتنا our room
ـهم their غرفتهم their room
The ة becomes ت

When you add an ending to a word ending in ة, it turns into ت: غرفة → غرفتي, حقيبة → حقيبتي, أسرة → أسرتي.تتحول التاء المربوطة إلى مفتوحة عند الإضافة: غرفة ← غرفتي.

الـ disappears

A noun cannot carry الـ and a possessive ending at once. Never write الغرفتي — just غرفتي.لا يجتمع التعريف بـ«الـ» مع الإضافة.

The other way — إضافة الإضافة

Arabic English
غرفة النوم the bedroom (the room of sleep)
غرفة الجلوس the living room
وقت الفراغ free time
كرة القدم football
ساعة يد a wristwatch
حقيبة أختي my sister's bag
The إضافة rule

The FIRST word never takes الـ; the second one usually does. غرفة النوم — never الغرفة النوم.المضاف لا يُعرَّف، والمضاف إليه يُعرَّف غالبًا.
