Imperatives

الأمر

al-amr

The imperative gives instructions and advice. It is built from the present tense by taking the prefix off and tidying the front of the word.يُبنى فعل الأمر من المضارع بحذف حرف المضارعة.

From present to command من المضارع إلى الأمر

Present Command (m) Command (f) English
تشربُ اشربْ اشربي drink
تأكلُ كُلْ كُلي eat
تذهبُ اذهبْ اذهبي go
ترتاحُ اِرتحْ اِرتاحي rest
تنظرُ انظرْ انظري look
تسألُ اسألْ اسألي ask
تكتبُ اكتبْ اكتبي write
تستمعُ استمعْ استمعي listen
Speaking to a girl

Add ـي for a female listener: اشربْ becomes اشربي. The exam may show either, so recognise both.للمخاطبة تُضاف الياء: اشربْ ← اشربي.

Advice and instructions النصيحة والتعليمات

  • Drink a lot of water.اشربْ كثيرًا من الماء.
  • Rest at home.اِرتحْ في البيت.
  • Go to the doctor.اذهبْ إلى الطبيب.
  • Eat vegetables and fruit.كُلْ الخضروات والفاكهة.
  • Go straight on, then turn right.امشِ مستقيمًا، ثم اتجهْ يمينًا.

The polite alternative

A bare command can sound blunt. يجب أن ("you should") is softer and scores just as well: يجب أن ترتاح.الأمر المجرد قد يبدو حادًّا؛ و«يجب أن ترتاح» أرقّ وأنسب.
