Which negative word you use depends entirely on the tense. Pick the wrong one and the sentence changes time.تختلف أداة النفي باختلاف الزمن، واختيار الأداة الخطأ يغيّر زمن الجملة.

The four you need أدوات النفي

Word	Tense	Example	English
لا	present	لا أشربُ القهوة.	I do not drink coffee.
ليس	is / are	ليس الطعامُ صحيًّا.	The food is not healthy.
لم	past	لم أذهبْ إلى المدرسة.	I did not go to school.
لن	future	لن أسافرَ غدًا.	I will not travel tomorrow.

The commonest mistake

لا negates a VERB; ليس negates a description with no verb in it. "I do not eat" is لا آكل, but "the food is not tasty" is ليس الطعام لذيذًا.«لا» تنفي الفعل، و«ليس» تنفي الجملة الاسمية.

Careful

ليس changes with the person: لستُ (I am not), لستَ (you are not), ليس (he is not), ليست (she is not).تتصرف «ليس»: لستُ، لستَ، ليس، ليست.
