Adjective agreement

مطابقة الصفة للموصوف

muṭābaqat aṣ-ṣifa lil-mawṣūf

The single most examined point in this topic. The adjective follows the noun and copies it — gender, number, and the definite article.أكثر نقاطِ هذا الموضوع اختبارًا: الصفة تتبع الموصوف وتطابقه.

Rule one — order

English says "a big house"; Arabic says "house big" — منزلٌ كبير. The adjective always comes second.الصفة بعد الموصوف دائمًا: منزلٌ كبير.

Rule two — it copies the noun المطابقة

Arabic English What matched
منزلٌ كبير a big house both indefinite, masculine
المنزلُ الكبير the big house both definite
غرفةٌ كبيرة a big room both feminine
الغرفةُ الكبيرة the big room both definite, feminine
حقيبةٌ سوداء a black bag feminine colour form
أصدقائي لطفاء my friends are kind plural of people
الأفلامُ ممتعة the films are enjoyable plural of things → feminine singular
The commonest slip

If the noun has الـ, the adjective must have الـ too. Writing المنزل كبير means "the house IS big" — a different sentence.إذا عُرِّف الموصوف عُرِّفت الصفة، وإلا صارت الجملة خبرية.

Things versus people

A plural of THINGS takes a feminine singular adjective: الأفلام ممتعة, الألوان جميلة. A plural of PEOPLE takes a real plural: أصدقائي لطفاء.جمع غير العاقل يوصف بالمفردة المؤنثة، وجمع العاقل بالجمع.

Two adjectives at once تعدد الصفات

Arabic English
تنورةٌ طويلةٌ سوداء a long black skirt
صديقتي لطيفةٌ ومرحة my friend is kind and cheerful
غرفتي صغيرةٌ لكنها مريحة my room is small but comfortable
